INSECTS
For several years, the hairy Chinch bugs have caused more damages to lawn than in the past. This pest has become a frequent enemy of the turf. This insect is very small, adults are 4 mm long. Chinch bugs reside in the thatch area. As the weather warms up, adults move into open areas and begin laying eggs. The eggs hatch and the nymphs (red) begin to suck the juices from host plants. The chinch bugs are usually very active in the summer. Hairy chinch bug causes damages by sucking plant juice from the grass stems. The first signs of damages are small fist sized yellowing areas of the sloped lawn (not irrigated) and exposed to the afternoon sun. As the insects continue to feed, these areas can grow very rapidly into large dead areas. Damaged areas are often taken over by weeds.
Inspect your lawn. If you see patches of damaged, torn-up or browning turf, give us a call. A small problem is much easier and less expensive to solve than one that spreads through the entire lawn.
A new enemy of lawns, the cranberry girdler is an insect which attacks young lawns. In large quantities, it will quickly destroy a lawn. It has been present in the city of Brossard and Roussillon for approximately 3 years. In early fall it causes damage similar to those made by white grubs. The grass rises as a ‘toupet’ unlike the grubs which is rather like a carpet (deeper). You have to be vigilant in the diagnosis, because unfortunately, treatments for white grubs and chinch bugs are very different.
